How to Start a New Path in Life

Starting out on a new path in life can be one of the most difficult things you ever do. While staying on the known path can give you a feeling of safety – even when you feel that it is the wrong path – you should ask yourself what the cost will be in the long run.

Perhaps you feel trapped, or you don’t know where to start to get on the new path. Perhaps you don’t even know what new path you should set out on, but know that you need to change. When the feeling that you need to change and that you need something new in your life won’t pass, it is time to stand up and do something about it.

There is, after all, a reason why books and films about people following their dreams or starting life anew are so popular. You look at those characters making the choices you wish you could make or want to make and you put yourself in their place. And, by doing so, you can feel – at least while the story lasts – as if you are part of the success as well. For a while you feel like you really can start out on a new path. You can find a new job, go to school again, or even start a family. And then that feeling of ecstasy fades as if it never existed.

But you must hold on to the spark that says you can take a new path. Perhaps you feel as if you have wasted too much time and that you should just keep plodding along on the road you’re already following? Arnold Bennet wrote: “The chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you, as perfect, as unspoiled, as if you have never wasted or misapplied a single moment in all your life.”

Once you know what the new path is you want to take, you should start on your way to get there ASAP. Update your CV, take a short course, do whatever first step it is you can do right now to start out on the new path. You can start slowly and build speed as you go. You will know when you are in the right place and when taking the new path paid off.
